Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder (Silver)

Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder (Silver) Review

For some reason, MDs didn't get far, in spite of their recording quality for live music is, in my experience, unsurpassed.
I agree with "fCh" (GMT-5, USA) that its intended audience may be: "For die-hard Sony/gadgetry fans". Also with: "Gary Coombs 'TraderGary' (Atlanta, GA)" in that its copy protection simply sucks...
J. D. Sheppard (Carlsbad, NM USA) made the best review, including simple facts like: "The sound it produces is exceptional". And more personal: "I simply love the hardware. It is truly one of the marvels of 21st century technology. The software, called SonicStage, is another story".
I don't agree with the last two reviewers on the complaint that it doesn't include a mic from the start. I'd rather buy myself a better one if I need it, and am glad they keep to making the best available "basic product". If you could get to this specialized device, you know how to get a mic. Besides, nothing "included" could match a good pricey stand alone mic like Sony's!

I've never used the software, the headphones are crappy as expected, but the machine honours the Sony tradition of sturdy, nice and quality portable audio. The battery compartment is useful given it's hard to get those batteries now. The display

Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder (Silver) Overview

Mini-Disc Walkman(R) player and recorder / Records at up to 64x speed / 6-band graphic equalizer / 58 hrs continuous playback

Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder (Silver) Specifications

Amazon.com Product Description The MZ-N10 Net MD Walkman recorder is the ultimate tool for creating great-sounding music mixes as well as live voice or music recordings. It transfers music at up to 64x speed, and the included SonicStage Jukebox software stores and manages digital music files, custom playlists, and music transfers, making it a cinch to transfer music to the device. A stereo minijack mic input accepts a range of microphones and is convenient for a variety of applications, and the unit comes with a built-in rechargeable battery capable of boosting battery life to 58 hours of playback when used in conjunction with a single AA battery.

Taking advantage of high-speed transfers from a PC via a direct USB connection, the MZ-N10 can record more than five hours of music on one 80-minute minidisc (using LP4 mode). It also uses Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which eliminates or reduces skipping during many active uses. The MZ-N10 is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. It plays back ATRAC3 files and supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and WAV. The unit provides up to 56 hours of continuous playback on one AA battery.

Recording is faster and easier than ever using the long-play LP4 mode and a supplied matching USB cradle with a direct connection to the jukebox. Placing the unit in the connected cradle also ensures that it automatically recharges.

The MZ-N10 also features an editing remote with a backlit LCD and a three-line dot-matrix display that shows nine characters per line for easy song searches and edits. Sony's Jog Dial navigator scrolls through track lists vertically to search for songs and groups--you can access desired points by simply rotating the dial with one finger then pushing it. A handy feature called Personal Disc Memory stores your preferred settings for listening volume and other functions when playing your favorite minidiscs.

The Easy Skip group-folder function helps you organize songs into albums or groups. Once transferred to the MZ-N10, you can easily skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-N10 also includes software for creatively organizing your music. MoodLogic software goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.

MoodLogic corrects your file information by identifying and re-titling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once you reconnect the device to your PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects you to the Musiclub Web site, and provides you with information about the song and artist as well as with links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.

Here's how you can use the included Sonic Stage Software to manage your music files:

What's in the Box

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder (Silver)

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder (Silver) Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

I won't repeat what other reviews have stated. The WS-500M does its job very well and is a good value, compared to other models, and the competition. Here I'll contrast it with the DS-40 and the WS-500M, which I own, and with the DS-61 (a 2gb version of the DS-40).

Nevertheless, there are some things to add about this unit, and DVRs in general. For best sound quality, it is essential that you pick the correct microphone sensitivity. The WS-500 offers two levels, the DS40 three. (More is better.) Moreover, the WS-500M requires you to go two levels down in a menu to change sensitivity. The DS-40 has a handy switch on the side. Curiously, the next lower model, WS-400S, has a two-position switch on the side. (You will not learn this detail from website descriptions, but only from the common manual or by experience.)

Every line of Olympus DVRs has a different setup of buttons. Those on the DS-40 are on the side, and it is easy to tell by touch that you have successfully started or stopped recording. The tiny buttons on the face of the WS-500M are much less positive. Compounding the problem is the absence of a green playback light on the WS-500M. The DS-40 has not only a red recording light but also a green playback pilot light, and these lights are brighter than the one on the WS-500M.

So far, it appears that I prefer the DS-40, but the WS-500M has some good points, as well. Its built-in USB plug means you can always connect to your computer, even if a USB cable is not at hand. The WS-500M is slightly but significantly smaller, which I find valuable. Considering that the WS-500M has four times the memory of the DS-40, it is a much better value, even though it lacks the latter's excellent removable stereo microphone. (The DS-61 has 2gb, same as the WS-500M.)

Bottom line: both the WS-500M and the DS-40 are excellent units, but the former is a better value. If pride of ownership derived from build quality is added to the equation, then the DS-40 is the one for you.

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder (Silver) Overview

Stay organized on the move with this high-class storage device and powerful music player. Transfer meetings or notes and even large documents to your PC with the easy-to-use USB input. The WS-500M is designed to be plugged directly into your computer for fast file transfer. With 2GB of internal memory, store up to 500 songs and listen to them in impressive stereo sound with track and artist name clearly displayed on the LCD.
