Toshiba DRW2 Multi-Drive DVD-R/RW Recorder Overview

Enjoy your favorite DVD movies as well as the ability to record programming and home video footage directly to disc with the Toshiba D-RW2 progressive scan DVD player/recorder. It allows you to record TV programming while your out of the house with a timer function, but it also offers easy one-touch recording. It records onto DVD-R/RW discs, and it's also compatible with playing CD-R/RW and VCD discs as well MP3 and WMA digital audio files burned to disc. With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it.

You get six compression modes for recording from 1 hour to 10 hours of video onto one disc. Other recording features include automatic title/chapter/thumbnail creation, time base correction, and auto finalization. Playback features include fast forward with audio (1.5x speed), fast scan, and slow motion.

The D-RW2 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers.

Toshiba SD-H400 Combination Progressive-Scan DVD Player and TiVo Digital Media Server

Toshiba SD-H400 Combination Progressive-Scan DVD Player and TiVo Digital Media Server Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

Let me start this review by saying that I ran across this item at a QVC Outlet store and it was EXTREMELY inexpensive - about . I had never had TiVo before so I figured for that price - "what the hell?" That said, since then I've added another Series2 TiVo to my home and just love TiVo...

The Good:
- I've seen other reviews of this product that criticize the remote, but I really like it. It is fairly large, but the layout of the nav and select buttons is very intuitive. That said, there are about 20 buttons that I never use.
- TiVo in general, rules. Not so much specific to this product, but I, like numerous others before me, agree that "TiVo will change your life". The days of scheduling time home for your own "must see TV" are over - watch it when you have time, skip the filler and commercials!
- Wireless TiVo (Home Media Option) is excellent - I had NO PROBLEMS getting this set up on my wireless network (unlike some other reviewers). One key is to follow TiVo's recommendation for wireless adapters TO THE LETTER. Plain-jane USB wireless adapters won't work - buy one of the recommended models. Once set up, you can stream music from your PC and view your digital pictures through the TiVo, two excellent features.
- My unit has worked flawlessly since I got it - no freezes, crashes or other problems.

The Bad:
- I'm really irritated by the DVD copy protection setup on this unit. If you want to watch a DVD, you can't have a VCR inline or the Macrovision copy protection is triggered, brightening and darkening the screen to deter taping of DVD's. Problem is, there's a good chance you might want to tape some shows from your TiVo, which means you need to jury-rig a setup to work around this nasty little problem. It's kind of moronic, which is typical of the Movie industry.
- Switching from TiVo mode to DVD mode takes too long.
- It's a fairly large unit, depthwise, and you may want to measure your cabinets before purchase. Mine was slightly too shallow and I needed to get the drill out for "modifications" in order to make it fit.
- This is one of the few TiVo models that has "Basic TiVo" built-in. Admittedly, Basic TiVo is an extremely hobbled version of the full TiVo service, but if you don't want to spend the money each month, this can be a nice feature. In addition, it gives you time to get used to the TiVo and its main functions before setting up the full service.

All in all, I'm very, very satisfied with the product and service.

Toshiba SD-H400 Combination Progressive-Scan DVD Player and TiVo Digital Media Server Specifications

Early Adopters Pick: June 2003. This is the first combination DVD player-TiVo digital video recorder.

Toshiba's SD-H400 digital media server offers the convenience of no-fee PVR service with the option for immediate upgrades alongside high-quality, progressive-scan DVD-Video playback--all from a single, easy-to-use component. The SD-H400 houses an 80 GB TiVo Series2 PVR that comes with TiVo Basic service, providing free, limited TiVo features right out of the box, with no subscription fees.

TiVo Basic service offers the ability to control live TV through features like pause, fast forward, rewind, and slow motion playback of live television; three days of electronic program guide; and manual recording capability by time and channel. The SD-H400 is the first device to offer TiVo Basic service.

The SD-H400's DVD-video section is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter for maximum color purity, detail, and resolution. When connected to a television via the unit's ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, you'll be ready to enjoy Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive technology with either DVDs or TiVo PVR playback. The SD-H400 can also play formats such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, video CD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs.

Because the SD-H400 is built on TiVo Series2 technology, you have the ability to upgrade to full TiVo service to enjoy features such as Season Pass (the ability to record every episode of a program no matter when it airs, automatically), WishList (which finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, or genre), Search by Title (which helps you find any show when all you know is its title), 14 days of program guide data, richer recording options, and an easy-to-use scheduling interface. (Full TiVo service costs .95 a month or 9 for a lifetime subscription; visit www.TiVo.com for detailed information.)

Another upgrade available to the Toshiba SD-H400 is the TiVo Home Media Option, a premium package of networked home entertainment. This configuration takes full advantage of the SD-H400's capabilities as a digital media server. The Home Media Option--an upgrade available via phone or broadband connection--lets you use the SD-H400's USB port to connect the SD-H400 to your wired or wireless home network and PC.

The Home Media Option adds the following features to the SD-H400: streaming MP3 files and digital photo viewing from a PC or Macintosh for playback through your TV or home-entertainment system, remote scheduling (through which you can schedule TiVo recordings from anywhere you can access the Internet), and connection to another TiVo Series2 PVR within your home (so you can share programs between the two units--for, say, viewing a program in the bedroom that was recorded in the family room, and vice versa).

Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player

Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

My SD2700 has always worked fine. My only complaint is that it will not play the DVD+R format (probably because it was built before that was invented?) so I have to go buy DVD-R and rerecord my home movies onto that.

Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player Feature

  • DVD-video player offers playback of DVDs, standard CDs, and CD-R-formatted discs
  • Picture Preference mode offers 2 black-level settings and 3 preset picture modes
  • Coaxial digital output for external decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks
  • HDCD precision filtering and decoding provide 20-bit audio resolution
  • Enhanced sound from conventional audio CDs

Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player Overview

Toshiba includes performance-enhancement and convenience features throughout its entire DVD line, and the SD2700 exemplifies the company's commitment to high-performance and high-value. A special Picture Preference mode (designated as EPM on the remote control) offers viewers a choice of two black level settings and three pre-set picture modes. The NORMAL setting provides the NTSC standard black cutoff level of 7.5ire. The Enhanced Black Level is pre-set for zero black level cutoff, providing a wider dynamic range of Brightness (black level). The three pre-set picture modes include: MOVIE ONE, for enhanced contrast and brighter black levels; MOVIE TWO for softer, more lustrous color rendition, with a glossy tone; and ANIMATION, which enhances the image by brightening colors and providing for rich, solid black reproduction. For optimum audio performance, the SD2700 features coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, permitting external decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS-encoded soundtracks. In addition, HDCD precision filtering and decoding provides true 20-bit audio resolution from the growing number of HDCD-enhanced CDs and also enhances the playback sound of conventional CDs.

Toshiba SD2700 DVD Player Specifications

The Toshiba SD2700 DVD player has all the standard features Toshiba incorporates into their DVD players, such as parallel video output, Dolby Digital and DTS compatible output, Spatializer N-2-2 virtual surround sound, three slow-motion speeds, and an icon-based onscreen display. But on this model, they've gone one step further by adding HDCD precision filtering and decoding for HDCD playback, and they've made it DVD/CD/Video CD/CD-R//DVD-R compatible.

Key features also include ColorStream component-video outputs. This component-video connection is the ideal way to connect a digital video source like DVD to a TV display resulting in increased image purity, incredibly lifelike colors, and crisp color resolutions. The 10-bit D/A converter with high-resolution filter ensures excellent picture quality, while the 24-bit/192 kHz audio converter with dialogue enhancement renders clear and dynamic sound reproduction.

Some of the more convenient features are four forward and reverse scan speeds and a unique first-setup menu that assists viewers in accurately setting up their player to suit their system's capabilities. Parental lock, time search, camera angle select, and 4-power picture zoom are all included on this model, as are S-video, composite video, and coaxial digital outputs, giving you a wide range of connection options.

The SD2700 comes with a remote control and a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor from Toshiba.

Toshiba SD2800 DVD Player with Component Video Output, Black

Toshiba SD2800 DVD Player with Component Video Output, Black Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

For the 5 or so years I've had this player it's been a real trooper. It's been easy to setup and use. The only "disc error" issues have arisen from burned discs that might have been overly compressed, or with a codec that is too new for it. However, among the virtues I've found with this device, is the wonderful quality of audio I get using the optical out with my component stereo system. The only knock against it: right near the beginning of playing almost any DVD, like a record, it skips one second of audio and then continues with no problem the rest of the way. I never understood this, but have lived easily with it.
Overall, this DVD player has served me well, and I would recommend it to most folks. Of course, with many things headed toward HD, this unit is pretty well obsolete. However, if you are currently happy not needing to see every pore on a person, instead opting for an engaging story, this unit is simple and perfect.

Toshiba SD2800 DVD Player with Component Video Output, Black Feature

  • ColorStream component-video output for ultimate DVD picture quality (when connected with an HD or HD-ready TV)
  • Optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs pass Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound (for use with compatible AV receiver)
  • MP3-CD (CD-R, CD-RW) playback
  • Offers black-level expansion, multiple picture settings, picture zoom
  • Dolby Digital and DTS surround output, Dialogue Expansion, simulated surround sound, and CD Text compatibility

Toshiba SD2800 DVD Player with Component Video Output, Black Overview

Imagine how your friends and relatives would feel if you were able to bring the most intense and lifelike movie theater experience right into your living room. Imagine how they'd react to a picture that's sharper than laser disc and twice as sharp as standard VHS. Imagine how the value of your couch would increase if it were enveloped in Dolby Digital Surround Sound? This is what happens when you have Toshiba DVD.Toshiba includes performance-enhancement and convenience features throughout its entire DVD line, and the SD2800 DVD player exemplifies the company's commitment to high-performance and high-value. It is PLUGE compatible. PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) delivers the black as well as below black signals to a television. With this functionality, consumers can use a PLUGE chart to accurately set their TV's black level. This then becomes the reference point for all other colors.
