This is a great recorder for dictation. The button placement is perfect and the functioning of the overwrite and append features is exactly what you expect. It made the transition from my beloved Lanier microcassette recorder to a digital recorder super easy.

I was originally concerned about the negative reviews complaining that the files are recorded in Olympus' proprietary format, DS2. They are, but the software included with the recorder allows you to convert the file to a WAV file by just going up to File and selecting Convert Dictation. Once the file is in WAV format, almost any program designed for transcription will play it. There is no need to buy a copy of the software for transcriptionists to use.
