It eliminates all handling noises. Furthermore, it also real handy because the field recorder should placed 6 feet away from the sound source for better recording.
I had to buy one from Japan because it wasn't available in the US then.
I also recommend a tripod. I favor the Trek-Tech T'pod because of of their great magnetic coupling.
